A 400-Year-Old Tradition

The Sacred Art of Devotion

Pichwai, meaning 'at the back' in Sanskrit, originated in the 17th century as large, intricate fabric backdrops for the deity of Shri Nath Ji at the Nathdwara temple. These paintings are not merely decor; they are visual representations of spiritual ecstasy.

Our artists continue to use natural stone pigments—vibrant blues from lapis lazuli, deep reds from cinnabar, and lush greens from malachite—ground by hand over weeks. The shimmering accents you see are not paint, but genuine 24-karat gold leaf, applied with meditative precision.

Every brushstroke is a prayer, every color a tribute to the moods of the seasons and the divine plays of Krishna.

Our 24-Step Masterpiece Process

01

Sacred Sketching

The process begins with 'Likhai'—the delicate sketching of the divine proportions on hand-woven cotton canvas treated with natural starch.

02

Pigment Grinding

Raw minerals and semi-precious stones are crushed and ground in ceramic mortars for up to 48 hours to achieve the perfect luminosity.

03

Gold Gilding

The final 'Shringar' involves the meticulous application of pure gold leaf and fine-line detailing with single-hair brushes.

From canvas curing to the final burnishing with agate stone, each piece takes between 4 to 12 weeks of dedicated craftsmanship.

The Legacy

Nathdwara Craftsmanship Since 1972

Founded in 1972 by the late Master Artist Shri Vallabhdas, The Krishnam Pichwai began as a small atelier dedicated to the spiritual revival of temple art. Our journey over the last five decades has been one of unwavering commitment to authenticity.

Today, the second and third generations of the family carry forward this light. We have expanded from a single workshop to a collective that supports over 12 senior master artists and their families, ensuring that the sacred geometry and pigment secrets of Nathdwara are not lost to time.

"Our mission is to bring the divine atmosphere of the Nathdwara shrine into modern homes, preserving the sanctity and aesthetic brilliance of Rajasthan's royal heritage."
